Afternoon Tea Week
Monday 9th - Sunday 15th August
Afternoon Tea Week is a week-long celebration of the great British tradition and celebrates what is a quintessential British custom. It is the perfect excuse to catch up with loved ones over a cup of tea, sandwiches and cakes, and maybe a glass of fizz thrown in for good measure. This year's Afternoon Tea Week will take place from Monday 9th - Sunday 15th August. It’s more than just a cup of tea though. Afternoon tea includes cakes, sandwiches, pastries, scones and much more. Celebrating Afternoon Tea week is simple, for the length of a week make a pause for Afternoon Tea as part of your day.
What’s is Afternoon Tea Week?
Afternoon Tea week was created to keep a tradition alive, which has graced British afternoons since the 1840s! Back in those days, people didn’t have dinner until around 8pm and lunch wasn’t a common practice so what did a hungry person do? The answer was obviously to create a mini-meal in the middle of the day! Traditionally, this meal contained tiny finger sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream and sweet treats like cakes and pastries which helped lift spirits and see you through the rest of the day.
This simple afternoon meal grew into a social event and became even more prominent once Queen Victoria herself took part! At that point, the concept of ‘tea reception’ was born. Lavish, fancy afternoons that could be hosted anywhere and include a small number of people, to a couple hundred of society’s most important faces.
What’s on the Earl’s Afternoon Tea Menu?
Here at the Earl, we offer both classic and savoury afternoon tea.
Starting with our classic, we offer finger sized sandwiches. Fillings include Egg mayonnaise, Tuna, Cheese & onion, freshly carved Ham.
Next is an array of cakes and sweet treats consisting off millionaire’s shortbread, carrot cake, macaroons, black cherry cheesecake, fruit cake & mature cheese and sticky toffee sponge,
To finish we serve both plain and sultana scones, with a generous serving of berry jam and Cornish clotted cream.
Did You Know: Scones were only added to the fare during the 20th century.
For our savoury afternoon tea, the sandwiches are the same, however, for those who don’t have a sweet tooth, there is cheese scones, red onion chutney, scotch egg, mini quiche, silver skin onion, sausage roll, ploughman’s pork pie, open English muffin, smoked salmon & cream cheese, and a mini cheese board. The perfect alternative!
